Acer has stuck with the game plan, but subtly refined the formula with the Acer Chromebook 13, which offers a 1080 screen, an adequate keyboard and a slim and light weight design.  Interestingly, they have decided to try the Nvidia Tegra quad core processor, primarily for the outstanding speed offered by the multi core technology.  Acer hopes to get the double benefit by using this technology,  the better speed offered by Nvidia, as well as providing better battery life at the same time.   Good idea, and that is what makes a Chromebook better than the competition!  The Acer Chromebook 13 sports a slim line build that’s refreshingly minimalist and the tapered lower surface which gives the laptop a sleek look.  Despite its thin profile, the notebook feels surprisingly solid and sturdy.

So what are the specifications of the Acer Chromebook 13?

As well as the Tegra quad core processor, the Acer Chromebook 13 comes with 2GB DDR3 RAM memory, as well as a solid state 16GB for on board storage, which is ample for this machine, remembering that nothing much on the Chrome Operating System needs to be saved locally.  The battery life, thanks to the Acer for breaking new ground and going with a different quad core processor, allows for about 9 hours on a full charge.  This now allows you to be mobile all day, and plug the machine in when you get home – now that’s what we want.

This Chromebook handled browsing the web, composing a document or streaming music with no problems, but performance slows down if you try more than a dozen tabs.  I am not sure if this would be a problem for you?

The port selection is typical of most Chromebooks, but can be a bit limited due to the lack of real estate on this device.  On the left side of the laptop, you get a USB 3.0 port (which is really great to have) as well as an SD card.  You also get a headphone and  / or microphone combination jack on the right hand side. You also get a HDMI port as well as an additional USB 3.0 port which are located on the back of the laptop – obviously not for convenience, because it is very difficult to plug in cables at the back.
The built in speaker offer great audio performance, but as expected, the bass will not shake the walls.  The laptop’s small keyboard is better than some of the competitor offerings available on a Chromebook, but at the end of the day, you have to keep your expectations in line with reality, and I guess my fingers are just a little larger than some!

How much does the Acer Chromebook 13 cost?

At around $250, this Acer Chromebook 13 is about equal with many typical Chromebooks, which is a surprise given its quad core Tegra processor and full HD display, which offer better than average performance, and a fantastic long battery life.  Furthermore, the laptop’s excellent keyboard, reliable touch pad and lightweight design make it an excellent productivity tool, as well as being useful for those day to day jobs where you want something quick and responsive.  Look out for discounted accessories on this model – and combine any extras you might need at the same time for a low price!
