Best Laptop for engineering students

I understand the pressure of being an engineering student, and I fully understand the laptop needs and computer requirements of hard working students.  So I have put together a list of the best laptops for engineering students, and I hope this list will also serve you as some of the best laptops for engineers also!  How do I know this?  Because I was once an engineering student and yes I know the pain of working on multiple software platforms some of which demand a lot of power. Throughout my experience as an engineering student, I realized that there are typically three types of tasks involved with engineering studies. First is of course report writing. With a ton of projects and research work at hand, word processing and internet becomes a must for engineering students. The second type of work involved is simulations and running heavy demanding applications such as Matlab and CAD. There is also a third type, which is usually tasked to EEE, computer systems/science and IT students, and that is programming. If you are already an engineer, then chances are that you still have similar demands from a laptop, i.e report writing, CAD or software engineering depending upon  your field of study.

Provided on this page are some suggestions for laptops that I would have bought as an engineering student, keeping all the above requirements in consideration. I find the following list of laptops to be among the best laptop for engineers and engineering students because they are neither over the top nor too low on the performance scale.

There is also another thing, for students on a scholarship such as myself, money is always an issue. Students are obviously not the richest bunch of people on the planet. So if you don’t have a rich mom or a side job or business, then purchasing a $1000 laptop is going to be a little difficult.

On the hand, if you are a professional engineer, and CAD designer you may choose to spend a little more on the tools of your trade. Although you will be looking at fairly expensive laptops, you would know that they are worth every penny.

Lenovo Y50 15.6-Inch Gaming Laptop (59425944)

Price: around $930

engineering laptopHere is why I believe that this is the best laptop for engineers and engineering students. Firstly, the Lenovo Y50 has a keyboard that is built with the perhaps the most premium ergonomic style and material. This is necessary for prolonged word processing and research projects. Secondly, this is a thin and a light laptop with a weight of about 5.3 pounds and thickness of 0.94″, this is important for students who walk around campus. Thirdly, it has a dedicated GT 860 NVIDIA GeForce 2GB graphics card that is a requirement for graphic intensive works such as simulations and designing. Basically, this is a gaming laptop, that can serve the laptop requirements of engineers and engineering students quite well.

Furthermore, at the heart of this laptop is one of the most powerful processor that laptops can have in this generation. The Intel Core i7-4700MQ which has a base clock speed of 2.4 GHz and can boost it up to 3.4 GHz when needed. It also has a good 8 GB of RAM, which can be expanded if the need arises.

The style and looks of this laptop are also second to none. After all, engineers should roll with style and this best engineering laptops will help you achieve that. HP ENVY 15-k012nr

Price: around $999.00

laptops for engineersThe HP ENVY 15-k012nr laptop is also a high end multimedia laptop but it has a fairly different hardware configuration than the Lenovo laptop listed above. This laptop has a configuration that would appeal to non-gamer engineering students.

For starters, this engineering laptop boasts a 15.6 inch FHD Touchscreen. Secondly, it features 12 GB of built in RAM but the processor is slightly inferior to the one in the Lenovo above – the Core i7-4510U but conserves battery life, so some upside and some downside. Furthermore, it does include a fairly powerful graphic card, the GTX 850m 2 GB VRAM.

This laptop will mostly appeal to those engineers who are looking for subtle, classical and professional looking laptop without compromising on power – keeps your battery life for longer!

Workstation Grade Laptop for Engineers

Toshiba Tecra W50-A1501

Price: around $ 1,650

Best engineering notebookOk – now you are a professional engineer (or aspiring), and you have the means and requirement for a real beast, then nothing would suite you better than a professional workstation grade laptop such as the Tecra laptop from Toshiba. Workstation grade laptops are laptops that features professional level hardware such as extreme processors and NVIDIA Quadro GPUs.

Quadro GPUs are significantly different than the GeForce line of GPUs from NVIDIA. They are also significantly expensive. When it comes to gaming, the Quadra GPU may not do as good as the Geforce GPU, but when it comes to CAD, Wireframe rendering and double-sided surfaces, or double precision, these GPUs are 10x faster. This particular laptop features the 2 GB NVIDIA Quadro K2100M discrete graphic card.

It also features a high performance Intel Core i7-4800MQ quad core processor that has a base clock speed of 2.7 GHz and can boost up to to 3.7 GHz when needed. This processor is usually not found in multimedia or average engineering laptops for students. This is certainly one of the best laptops for engineers also features 16 GB of high performance RAM as well as 500 GB of HDD that has rpm of 7200, which is faster than the conventional 5400 rpm HDD. This laptop comes with Windows 8.1 and you do get the option of downgrading the OS to Window 7.

Remember, this is not a light and easy to carry around laptop. In fact no workstation laptops are really portable.

Best Budget Laptop for Engineers and Engineering Students

Acer Aspire E5-571-56UQ

Price: $399.99

budget laptop for engineersNow I know some of us don’t have the budget of a full fledged engineer. Some of us are students on tight budget and therefore may need the best engineering laptop that can promise to deliver engineering work as well as cost less. In fact in freshman year students and most of the time even as a senior year student, you will rarely need a super powerful laptop.

The reason I have listed the Acer Aspire E5-571-56UQ here as the best choice from the plethora of budget laptops available in the market is due to the fact that is has a good mid end processor and significantly large amount of RAM.

The Intel Core i5-4210U in this laptop is a powerful dual core/ multi-threading enable processor that has the base clock speed of 1.7 GHz per core. If you want to perform seamless designing jobs or perform low level work on CAD software at a budget range then this a great laptop. For a budget laptop, this has one of the highest amount of RAM in the market – 8GB DDR 3. The RAM and the processor are prime reasons why this laptop is listed here. But the story of this laptop does not just end there. It has one of the longest battery lives of all budget laptops as well. With more than 6.5 hours battery endurance, this notebook is almost touching the range of Ultrabooks.

This laptop cannot play the latest games, but should be able to handle most of the old, light, browser based and online games at low graphics with ease.
