Lenovo ThinkPad W540

The awesome Lenovo ThinkPad W540 is more than just a laptop – I would describe this beast as a mobile workstation.  This powerhouse would be more than suitable for high end graphics arts users, photo shopping, or video and music editors.

This chunky laptop features a very fast solid state drive ( or SSD for short), stunning Intel Core i7 processor, and independent Nvidia Quadro K2100 graphics processor. For the visually discerning, this machine offers an exceptional self calibrating computer screen, which is crucial for all of those photographers and artists who want to ensure the integrity of the color palette. Though not a system designed for gaming, the Lenovo IdeaPad W540 would be more than able to handle any graphics intensive software, as the W540 is truly a multimedia powerhouse.

Features of the Lenovo ThinkPad W540

Lenovo have retained the design of the W540 is just like a traditional ThinkPad. It measures only a little over 1 inch thick and weighs a little over 2.5kg. Since it has so much space to work with, the system has a very large track pad with a pointing stick and a keyboard that is backlit for convenience, and also comes with a full sized keypad. The keyboard is solid, with gently curved concave keys that give you that nice ergonomically designed feeling – which of course it is!

So here we find ourselves discussing the merits of this super laptop, with such incredible built in power and capacity, but we feel the need to put a negative against this machine in terms of weight and portability.  Okay it is not the lightest machine that we have ever reviewed, but in comparison with the other powerhouse machines such as Alienware and ROG, this machine measures up pretty nicely.  Really we should be more interested in how much horse power we need to get the job done, rather than focus on how portable it is.  At the end of the day, it is a laptop, and you therefore can take it wherever you want to go.  It is not a tablet, and thank goodness for that, because it can do way more than a tablet or mini laptop could ever hope to achieve!  This machine is a magnificent multi media device and offers you great all round performance for when the going gets tough!

Battery life is also excellent, with more than 6 hours before needing a recharge, which is better than most of the competition.

But let us not forget the unique feature of the Lenovo ThinkPad W540 – it comes with an integrated X-Rite Pantone color calibrator. Especially to suit the artist and serious photographer, this machine provides the best color palette using a camera built into the palm rest to view and adjust the color balance on the laptop display. This is a serious benefit if you wish to achieve true color clarity for your photography or video projects.

Summary of the Lenovo ThinkPad W540

The Lenovo ThinkPad W540 offer the best of both worlds.  It provides top of the line power and benchmark performance whilst at the same time offers sublime clarity and excellent visuals via its self color calibrating screen. Its battery life and performance exceed the expectations of most mobile workstations, and better still for those who stay loyal to the IBM roots, the Lenovo W540 ThinkPad retains the look and feel of a traditional ThinkPad laptop.
