So, this is the newest offering from Microsoft, and is the latest upgrade to the Surface 2.  Remember this was touted to be the “tablet that would replace your laptop”.  So does it meet these lofty claims?
Without doubt, the Surface Pro 3 from Microsoft has made huge steps in the market and has provided a shift in the way consumers connect with their technology.  So how has the Surface Pro 3 measured up against this claim – does it replace your laptop?  How does it measure up against the competition amongst other tablet devices?  How does it stack up against mobile devices in general?
We thought you might like a general review of the Surface Pro 3 and run a comparison against some of the competition, and maybe collect some reviews by users to see what people really think!

What is a Surface Pro 3?

The device fits squarely amongst the technology referred to as mobile tablets.  Tablets are generally known for their slim line design, extremely light weight, and ultimate portability.  Designed to be about the size of a A4 piece of paper, and to replace the need to carry a note pad around with you, the Surface Pro 3 can fit in your satchel, hand bag, or just fit conveniently under your arm.  The device can start up virtually instantly, and offers easy connectivity as long as you have access to wireless internet.  The base level Surface Pro 3 is powered by an Intel Core i3 processor, and sports 56GB of on board storage.  If you require higher performance, there are two additional models available, offering Core i5 and i7 processors, with 128GB and 256GB memory respectively, although these models come with a higher price tag.  The selling feature of the Surface Pro 3 is the 12 inch high resolution display, which of course offers touch screen capability which provides for optimal user experience.

So how does this Surface Pro 3 replace my laptop?

The flip up kick stand allows almost all variations in the way you can use the Surface Pro 3, from a lie flat device to a stand up on the desk format, which provides the user all options between versatile and comfortable.  The optional click-in keyboard allows you to use the full screen for visual display and entertainment, while tapping away on a compact but fully functional keyboard, or the touch screen offers data input options when you are on the go.  The Surface Pro 3 offers multiple data ports including a full size USB 3.0, mini display port and micro SD card reader.  So, whilst maybe not offering the connectivity of a full desktop computer, this device is no slouch in terms of performance.

What other features does the Surface Pro 3 offer?

Maybe we shouldn’t try to compare the Surface Pro 3 with a laptop!  With a slim line thickness of only 0.36 inches (or 0.5 inches with the keyboard in stowed position) and a weight of only 2.2 pounds (yes – it weighs only 1kg!), this device offers the ultimate in portability and flexibility.  The Surface Pro 3 comes pre-loaded with Windows 8.1 Pro version, so now you can take your office with you wherever you go.  Whilst it does not have the horsepower of a full fledged desktop machine, this little beauty comes with all the functionality and connectivity that you would require for normal usage.  Have you heard about the “Surface Pen”?  This handy additional feature is more than just another accessory.  The Surface Pen is integrated with the Surface Pro 3 and offers an alternative data entry option, allowing the user to input handwritten notes in your own natural hand writing style.  You can mark up documents, add signatures, or just add your thoughts while the idea is fresh, and prevent that annoying tendency of forgetting that moment of inspiration.  Another of the clever design aspects is the palm lock feature which allows you to rest your writing hand on the touch screen without that annoying tendency for the cursor to jump from one touch to another or to leave a trace where you don’t intend it.

Additional Features of the Surface Pro 3

Because the Surface Pro 3 comes pre-loaded with Windows 8.1 Pro, you can use all your traditional desk top programs, including entertainment, media and other fun stuff.  You can also use the touch screen facility to upload all the touch enabled applications from the Windows Store.  The Surface Pro 3 comes with Dual HD cameras for photos and face-to-face chat with a 5.0MP front and rear camera and stereo microphones.  This machine is not just for work, yes you can play as well.  Enjoy music streaming, watch a movie, you can even play games with crisp clear graphics and impressive audio.  Create your visions with picture editing, photography, video production, art and design work.  Don’t let your imagination be restricted by the limitations of your technology!

In summary, this device offers you full laptop capability in the size of a tablet.  With Microsoft Windows 8.1 Pro Operating System, you can run your favorite programs, download applications from the Windows Store as well as easily and simply export files with enhanced data protection and networking.  Don’t be fooled by the tiny exterior, this Microsoft Surface Pro gives you all the power and flexibility you need.  Discover how the Surface Pro fits into your busy schedule to help you accomplish more than ever before.
This device fits into a category all of its own – snap from a laptop back to a tablet, take it on the bus, in front of the TV, and back to your desk with flip up kick stand, and clip on keyboard.  The new Surface Pro 3 can do it all. With an eye catching 12 inch display in a slim line package, Surface Pro 3 has all the power and performance of a laptop in an incredibly lightweight, versatile form. It may just be the ultimate device.
